James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879), Scottish theoretical physicist and founder of classical electrodynamics, is widely considered one of the greatest physicists after Newton. Educated at the University of Edinburgh and Cambridge, he held professorships at Aberdeen, King's College London, and Cambridge.
Maxwell's supreme achievement was formulating Maxwell's equations—four elegant mathematical equations unifying electricity, magnetism, and optics into electromagnetic field theory. He mathematically predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves, calculating their speed to be exactly the speed of light, thereby proving light itself is an electromagnetic wave. This prediction was later confirmed by Heinrich Hertz's experiments.
Maxwell also made pioneering contributions to kinetic theory, establishing the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. Einstein described Maxwell's influence on physics as 'the most profound and productive since Newton.' Maxwell's equations form the theoretical foundation of all modern electrical engineering and telecommunications.
